Today’s Rate…$$$,
Somehow, people manage to free their mobiles from their grip, especially from their fingers, which play a vital role in scrolling through the mobile screen.
The day was bright outside, with high-beam sunlight encouraging us to drink more water to manage dehydration. Prayash and Bhim were in a casual action, sitting on a couch while Anu prepared tea for everyone. During tea time, we engaged in a provocative and entertaining conversation about their job roles in a work placement. “Bhim Ji, has a new episode of Nepal Idol been uploaded?” I asked him. “Not sure, haven’t checked,” Bhim replied. Prayash smiled and said, “There’s no new episode yet, dai. Let’s re-watch the previous episode then.” I tuned into YouTube for Nepal Idol.
Laptops were placed on the table, one of them streaming a Nepal Idol program on AP 1 television. Everyone was engaged, showing interest in the upcoming singers and their voices. Suddenly, Bhim opened the door to a different topic, saying, “Dai, the currency rate has increased today; Facebook notified me.” Everyone forgot about Nepal Idol and shifted their focus to discuss the currency rate. “Really? What’s the rate today, Bhim Ji?” He replied, “It’s Rs 86 today.” Everyone got busy on their mobiles, scrolling through Facebook. Notifications kept coming in, either through vibration or different sound modes, depending on the mobile brand, creating an active atmosphere. I observed everyone with their eyes fixed on the screen, unsure of what they were looking for. It felt like a mobile therapy session.
“I see,” I said, breaking the silence. “It’s not too bad.” Anu added, “But nowadays, they take over a week to deliver the amount to the right person.” Everyone agreed. I contributed to the conversation, saying, “I don’t know how they transfer the money; it’s their way. But I guess they play with the money in different parts until it reaches the right person, and that’s why it takes over a week. However, the reality is the money is transferred.” To understand all this, we need to engage with them, find people who send money, and negotiate the rate, like “Today’s rate … $$$$, the highest ever.”
I suggested my friend check with another agent for the rate, and he found Rs 86.50, while another one quoted Rs 86.25. “Isn’t it amazing?” I exclaimed. We could see advertisements on the Facebook wall presented in different ways, as shown in the examples below.
